One book that recently came out is Pink Box: Inside Japan’s Sex Clubs by Joan Sinclair. Somehow this non-Japanese photographer was able to get on friendly terms with the sex industry and actually photographed many of the girls and there various workplaces! This book has some really tasteful and sexy photos that show a lot of the interesting places that usual foreigners can never see, including: mermaid hostess bar, nurse, stewardess and even a train themed place where the room is set up like a train car and you can touch the girls in a school girl outfit. Seeing this book will make you wish you were Japanese sometimes, but at least you can experience this hidden side of Japan with spending just a fraction of the real cost by buying the book.

Image Clubs (イメージクラブ, imējikurabu or イメクラimēkura) provide adult services with the main selling point being a theme. Some common themes are office ladies (OL), nurses, school girls, and there are even some that are themed like train cars so you can give into your urge to feel up the hot girl on the crowded train (which btw Japan has a serious problem with).

Like with soaplands, it is sometimes hard for foreigners to get in, but there are some that will let you in. Usually full sex is not offered at these places to make them legal but just about everything else you can think of goes on.

Soapland (ソープランド, sōpurand) is a Japanese word for a type of brothel where men can be bathed by and can bathe with female prostitutes (there are a few for a female clientele). Soaplands are special in the idea that the woman’s work area has two rooms in it. One is a small area with a small couch and bed, and the other is a large shower room that has a large bath and room for an inflatable mattress. Commonly the man has his teeth brushed and body washed. He then lies on the air mattress while the female employee covers herself with liquid lotion and slides her body up and down the man’s body. She gracefully slides in between his legs, under and around his body. This form of eroticism is considered to be the highest quality and thus soapland costs the most of the various types of Japanese brothels. If the man so chooses they can engage in sex on the mat. If not, when the “mat play” is over they rinse off and go to the bed to have sex.

Soaplands are the top of the food chain when it comes to adult services in Japan. They are usually very expensive (anywhere from 300-1000 USD) depending on the shop, place and time you get. Usually there are a bunch of soaplands grouped in a certain area. The most famous soapland district is called Yoshiwara. Yoshiwara is in Tokyo close to Ueno. Unfortunately, like most sexual services in Japan, many soaplands do not accept foreigners; however a few do, such as Martini.

The best way to get to Yoshiwara is to get to Ueno or Uguisudani Stations on the Yamanote Line and get a taxi. Ask to go to a soapland or Yoshiwara and most likely they will be able to help you. Sometimes they will suggest a place for you that will accept foreigners (if they know a place) but if you want you can just get to the area and walk around.
